Accommodation: Private Landlords

Renting privately can offer flexibility around where you want to live, and how much you want to pay. Many students also rent privately as a group in their second or third year.

Renting privately in Hereford

With a compact city-centre, there is a great range of private accommodation available within walking-distance of HCA’s campus.

Some students move into private rented accommodation in their second- or third-years - often as a group - others rent from Day 1.

Finding the right accommodation for you is an important part of your experience as a student. Renting privately can give you more flexibility to find your perfect pad.

Renting a room (or a house or flat) can seem like a daunting experience if you’re doing it for the first time, especially if you are not familiar with the area. Our Student Experience team can support you with advice and tips on how to handle the process, and a point of contact once you are moved in.

At HCA we are not able to arrange private accommodation on your behalf, but the following websites are a great place to start looking for rental opportunities:

SpareRoom, RightMove, Zoopla

Alternatively you may want to register with a local lettings agent. Once you tell them your budget, and any other requirements, they can send through any new listings as soon as they become available.

Quick tips for first-time renters

Location, location, location

If you can't visit, use Google Maps to get a sense for walking distances from the places like supermarkets, campus and bus stops. Street View will also give you a sense of the neighbourhood.

Things landlords may ask for:

  • ID - passport or driving license
  • A guarantor (often a parent or carer) as a back-up for rent
  • A deposit (usually one month's rent)

Furnished or unfurnished

Most flats + houses will be unfurnished. Facebook Marketplace, Gumtree + Freecycle are good places to get started with cheap (or free furniture).
