Two final-year students from the BA (Hons) Textile Design course at Hereford College of Arts (HCA) have each won a two-week work placement with leading bespoke engineering services company Envisage Group, in Coventry.

Envisage Group has a global reputation for combining its expertise in design, innovative engineering and traditional craftsmanship with outstanding quality, working with the world’s largest and most prestigious automotive companies.

The Company’s Colour, Materials and Finish (CMF) designers, were first attracted to HCA by the College’s passion to challenge existing perceptions of materiality and ability to blend high-quality, traditional craftsmanship with a forward-thinking vision.

Students were encouraged to use their existing skills, new technologies, and any unusual processes to explore their materials. Finally, they were encouraged to think playfully about the outcome of the project, and consider everything from artefacts, to fashion, interiors, architecture and more!

Sammie Mayers, Kate Webster and Philippa Jones from Envisage Group’s CMF team had a tough time choosing a winner, so instead chose two. Megan Swancott and Rebekah Harding both won a cash-prize and a two-week work placement at Envisage Group in Coventry. During their placement they will be working with the CMF team learning more about the discipline, and how they can use their textile skills – particularly their intuition with colour and materials.

Commenting on the high standard of the students’ work, Kate Webster said, “CMF is an expanding field for textile designers. Those specialising in CMF can work in any industry and the exciting thing is the experimentation with process. We really enjoyed working with the textile students at HCA and decided to chose two winners as the standard of work was so high. It was their breadth of material experimentation and their passion for CMF that made Megan and Rebekah stand out.”
