Step into the performing arts industry: develop your acting, voice and movement skills, create, collaborate and perform.

Overview


The practical nature of the course ensures that you will be on your feet, doing what you love – performing and being a performance maker!  

You will build your CV, skills and professional network throughout the duration of the course. Along the way you will perform at major public events and get feedback on your creative work from Artistic Directors at the Birmingham Rep. 

You will be supported in preparing your professional portfolio, which will be reviewed, and quality checked by a casting agent. 

 Your learning journey with us will be unique to you. Our small group sizes and high contact hours mean that you will be mentored and coached by our experienced tutors to become the creative professional you want to be.

What you will learn

PERFORMING TO AN AUDIENCE

You will learn and develop skills that you need to perform. Daily skills sessions will develop your acting, vocal and singing skills, movement and technical theatre skills. Skills sessions are delivered by industry professionals. 

 START A COMPANY

With your peers you will set up and learn the in’s and out’s of running a start-up business and you will have a one weeklong work experience performing to the public at a local venue. 

CREATIVE LAB

You will develop your creative muscle, as well as your collaboration, performance making and performance skills through four diverse performative projects over the year. 

REHEARSING A PERFORMANCE

You will be introduced to the art of making theatre. Through mini lectures you will have the theoretical foundations to practically explore your learning through the development of a directed scenes and perform these. 

CREATING A PERFORMANCE

You will create and develop a performance in response to a live brief set by the Hay Festival. 

MAJOR PUBLIC PERFORMANCE

You will continue to develop your  acting, vocal and singing skills and movement skills, as well as other skills needed in the Industry, eg. Puppetry, stage combat, aerial circus, film and radio acting that will accumulate in a showcase of your work.

EXPLORING YOUR FUTURE

You will have one-to-one career coaching that will lead to you being crystal clear on the type of artist you aim to be and you will have a clear plan on how to achieve your goal. We also encourage you to engage with potential employers and seek out work experiences.

COLLABORATIVE ENCOUNTERS

Your creative ideas can be fully explored in this module. Through various collaborative projects with external partners, or projects set by yourself you can play and experiment to hone in on your identity as a creative and your prefered way of working.

CONTEMPORARY PERFORMANCE PRACTICE

You will engage with contemporary texts and theories and explore these practically through a performance project.

EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES IN PERFORMANCE

You will be introduced to and learn how to use a variety of different emerging technologies that you can creatively explore integrating into performances. 

SOLO PRACTICE

You will select and develop a specific skill linked to your career ambition and demonstrate your skill development in performance/ film/ or any other medium that is suitable. You will have the opportunity to receive feedback on your work from industry professionals. 

PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE

You will draw together your professional portfolio that is relevant to your career choice. This could include headshots, a website, showreels, auditions, social media presence. You can receive feedback on your work from a casting agent and you have the opportunity to do a week-long work experience with the Birmingham Rep at the end of the year. 

EXTENDED RESEARCH PROJECT

You will develop a practical, performative or academic research project of your choice with the support of your tutor that reflects your interests.  

PROFESSIONAL COLLABORATIVE PROJECT

In collaboration with your peers you will create, develop and rehearse a final performance that is of professional standard that puts your strengths on display. 

There will be multiple shows and the chance for you to invite potential agents.

Through the collaborative nature of the course you will be working closely with musicians, designers, photographers and makers in the rehearsal room throughout your course.

You will develop strong creative connections that can last a life time and support you beyond your life as a student and into your professional life. 

You will be at the heart of a dynamic and supportive arts community - with a culture and scale designed to help you thrive as an artist and grow as an individual. 

Make your mark on the world


Whilst on the course you are encouraged and supported to engage with opportunities that arise within industry. This means you will have a body of professional experience by the time you graduate. 

Where possible we also ensure your professional experience over the three years can be used towards your assignments.

In the past students have had opportunities working with Open Sky Productions, the Fetch, Ferral, Rural Media, The Courtyard, Birmingham Royal Ballet and various film productions to name but a few.

Following the course, students pursue various career pathways. Some continue with performance, while other recent graduates have gone on to become the Stage Manager at the Birmingham Rep, or to study an MA at East 15.

As a performing arts student, you'll engage in practical workshops led by subject specialists to develop essential skills for your craft of choice. 

You will work on live project briefs that mirror industry demands, applying what you've learned in real-world contexts. Assessment will be varied, including performances, written work, and reflective practices. One-on-one coaching will support your academic and your career development. Additionally you will have the opportunity to engage in work experiences throughout your programme. 

Assignments, especially in your third year, are designed to be flexible, allowing you to tailor your projects to align with your personal interests and career goals, ensuring you’re well-prepared for a successful career in the performing arts. 

The course timetable is designed to mirror a professional rehearsal day, with skill development sessions in the mornings followed by rehearsals in the afternoons. This structure ensures that you not only build and refine your technical abilities but also have ample time to apply those skills in a practical, collaborative environment 

Our course connects you to the wider world of performing arts through a variety of enriching experiences. 

You’ll benefit from visiting lecturers who are industry professionals, offering insights and expertise directly from the field. We maintain strong links with external companies, agents and theatres, providing opportunities for networking, collaboration, and real-world exposure. 

Additionally, organised trips to theatres, performances, and industry events will broaden your perspective and deepen your understanding of the wider performing arts landscape. These connections ensure you’re well-prepared to step into the professional world with confidence. 

  • THEATRES: Two production theatres are versatile performance spaces that allow you to create diverse and challenging work in a range of performance styles whilst using industry-standard technologies. Featuring modular staging, a full lighting rig and a PA system, plus cinema-quality digital projection. With optional raked seating for nearly 100 people, they can be arranged in a variety of different audience configurations making them ideal for gigs, performances, lectures, film, theatre, dance and screenings.
  • DANCE STUDIO: A large, purpose-built, fully equipped dance studio has sprung wooden floors, air conditioning and features full-length mirrors for analysing posture and movement. This contemporary space is a comfortable place for exercise, choreography, and rehearsal, guided by our specialist tutors and guest lectures.
  • SOUND EDITING: A highly specialised sound-editing suite allows you to explore a range of equipment for creating and editing sound. You can make your own music using Sibelius, Foley sound effects, or various sound manipulation tools using Logic Pro. Our team of experienced technical demonstrators will assist you in the production of professional-quality music and sound.
  • REHEARSAL SPACES: Sing, play and collaborate in the range of rehearsal spaces that can be found across our campuses. From the large open Cathedral space to intimate practice rooms there is a space to suit all needs. With the majority of these spaces being open-access, students can gather and practice throughout the term, managing their own timetables around scheduled lectures and tutorials.
  • MEDIA STORE: You will have the opportunity to get hands-on experience using the professional audiovisual and production kit from the media store to record, film or produce your projects.

    That includes:

    Laptops, audio interfaces, midi controllers, hard drives and accessories.

    SLR/DSLR cameras 35mm cameras, tripods and lenses.

    Blackmagic cine camera and HD video cameras.

    Location recording equipment (including track, dolly etc).

    Projectors, video mixers, Super 8.

Course partnerships

Hay Festival

Each year, our students collaborate with a director to create a family-friendly performance for the Hay Festival. Based on a theme or book provided by the international festival, you'll have the opportunity to bring stories to life. Past projects have included reimagined Shakespeare plays and original works inspired by children’s books, with students working directly with authors like Nicola Davies during the creative process. This unique experience blends creativity, literature, and performance, offering students a chance to showcase their talents on a renowned platform.

Birmingham Rep

The Birmingham Rep, one of the UK’s oldest producing theatres, is celebrated for its innovative productions, from new plays to classic works. With a strong tradition of nurturing emerging talent, The Rep has premiered many significant plays and hosted renowned actors and directors. Through our connections with The Rep, you’ll have the opportunity to share your creative work with their artistic and educational teams, enjoy backstage tours, and participate in a week-long work experience during your final year.

Pentabus

Pentabus is a nationally-renowned touring company dedicated to producing new work for rural communities across the UK and beyond. You’ll have the chance to engage with the Pentabus team through various opportunities. Students have previously participated in their Young Writers’ program, assisted with research and development for new productions, gained valuable work experience, and attended their shows. This collaboration offers a unique insight into creating and delivering theatre in rural communities.

Applying to HCA

  • Minimum age 18.
  • UCAS Points: For anyone applying for September 2025 entry and beyond, we are looking for applicants who have achieved at or beyond 96 – 112 UCAS Tariff Points. 

    However, whilst qualifications are important, our offers are not solely based on academic results. We may make offers based on other evidence of talent and suitability for the course –  for more details about UCAS Tariffs please see tariff explanation and advice on the UCAS website

  • Mature students: Applications from mature students with relevant experience will also be considered.
  • Recognition of Prior Learning Opportunities: the college welcomes applications from students with prior learning and/or previous experience. Further details on eligibility can be found on page 15 of our Admissions Policy.
  • Applicants whose first language is not English – proof of IELTS overall score of 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in all sections (reading, writing, listening & speaking) is required.

We receive a high number of application all our subject areas so we recommend that you make your application as early as possible.

As soon as you apply, our Registry team will be in touch to let you know they have received your application. At this point they will also send out information on portfolios or auditions.

Portfolios and auditions are a chance for you to showcase yourself in a different way. They give us an idea of what excites you about the subject, and what you might want to explore further on the course. 

We will send out guidance on how to submit your portfolio, or book and audition date, and if you have any questions you will always be able to reach out to us for assistance or clarification.

After submitting your portfolio online, your work will be reviewed by a course lead, and you will receive personal feedback alongside your offer.
