Drawing day - Post-16 students at CRC

Develop your knowledge of the creative industries through dynamic and individualised teaching and learning experiences.

Overview

Go beyond the basics with an immersive diploma course designed to give you the skills and confidence you need to thrive in a new era of art and design.

You will learn through real-world projects, have access to an incredible range of professional workshop and studio facilities and build your subject knowledge through feedback from highly-qualified teaching staff,  technical demonstrators and working creative professionals.

On this course you will be supported to access specialised workshops across a wide range of disciplines such as small metals, 3D, printmaking, textiles, ceramics, photography, and digital media, using industry-standard techniques. After exploring all media in the first year of the extended diploma, you will have the opportunity to specialise in your second year.

Our student-centred approach underpins a dynamic curriculum that adapts to your needs, emphasising technical and transferable skills for professional and educational advancement.

The best thing about this course has been the opportunities you get. There are a range of workshops and there is no set medium to work in - it allows people creative freedom. The tutors are also lovely, and are extremely helpful in feedback and pointers.

Jasper Cunliffe

Everyone is super supportive and helpful, and you have freedom to access workshops.

Zach Parry

All my ideas are considered and encouraged.

Georgie Wixey

I like how much help you can get and how easy it is to talk to the tutors.

Lyric Fuller

The best thing about HCA is meeting like-minded people who are as invested into there chosen art as I was. This includes students and staff - who give us the opportunity to learn from each other.

Assessment and support

Despite the popularity of this course, we are able to ensure personalised support by dividing students into smaller tutor groups for both pastoral and academic guidance.

Weekly one-on-one tutorials and group critiques will help you navigate your projects, while summative assessments provide detailed feedback on your progress at the end of each unit.

With a focus on coursework rather than exams, the course mirrors the work environment of an employer. Each student’s journey is unique, and we strive to tailor the course to meet your individual needs.

Connected to industry

Our innovative curriculum is designed with industry needs in mind. It gives you the chance to build first-hand experience working on real projects for major local organisations while also giving you the space and creative freedom to build an individual portfolio shaped by your own interests.

At HCA, you will also have access to university-level facilities and get to hear from inspiring guest speakers like Turner Prize winner Jeremy Deller and iconic photographer Martin Parr.

These real-world experiences, along with the college's extensive network of industry connections, will boost your employability and prepare you for success in the creative world.

Meet the team

Beyond the everyday

Beyond the classroom, you will find professional and friendly college culture. On weekly “ways of working” sessions you will mix with students from different courses, through collaborative activities and guest lectures focused on career paths to keep you thinking about the future.

You will go on at least three trips a year to places like London, Bristol and Manchester for creative inspiration.

On campus you will have your own permanent studio space and the freedom to manage your time. You will have open access to our specialist library, digital suites, studios and a wide range of workshops to allow you explore and develop your own art practice.

With supportive tutors and a warm, welcoming environment, we’re here to help you grow and connect with like-minded people while enjoying college life to the fullest.

What you will learn

We also offer a one-year Level 2 diploma course, that allows you to enter in at a lower entry point to gain experience and confidence before moving onto the 2 year Level 3 Extended Diploma course. See more information further down the page.

You will start the course by working for Hereford Applefest, creating content for the High Town festival in September, including banners, decorations and Hereford themed Art Exhibitions.  At the same time, we’ll be inducting you into different areas of the college, so you are confident and ready to thrive.

Over the following 10 weeks, you’ll be on rotation projects; a series of short 2 week projects where you rotate through 5 different specialisms, each associated with a workshop and specialist tutor.

For two weeks, straddling the winter break, you’ll work in groups designing a product and will pitch your outcomes to a Team of professionals in a Dragon’s Den style.

Next, you’ll develop digital design skills in a ‘client lead’ brief producing illustration, graphic design and moving image that will be displayed on the client’s online spaces.

From working under specification, you’ll now move into creative freedom, taking music as your muse and with 4 weeks, you rotate through more workshop processes and take the project in a direction of your own.

This builds you into Final Major Project, a 10 week project where an open brief allows you to explore any avenue. Here, we will challenge you to explore, experiment, take creative risks and then refine.  Your best work will be displayed in the Summer Showcase, an exciting end.

In June, you’ll work an additional life brief and have a summer project.

Entrance requirements for Level 2 vs Level 3

Some students feel like they will benefit from an additional year of study before starting their Level 3 Extended Diploma. This may be because they feel that their experience or GCSE grades will not put them in the best position to reach their full potential on the Level 3 Extended Diploma course yet.

In this case we offer a Level 2 Diploma, which provides you with the  opportunity to build out a foundation in your subject area for a year as well as additional support with English and Maths, before moving on to Level 3 Extended Diploma (assuming you meet the grades required to progress). This means that you will study with us over a 3 year duration (1 year at Level 2, and 2 years at Level 3). Studying a Level 2 qualification in your chosen course area, can be a valuable step in achieving your goals at Level 3.

The Level 3 courses for Post-16 students are a two-year qualification certified by the UAL Awarding Body.

There are three key passing grades at Level 3: Distinction (168 UCAS points), Merit (120 UCAS points) and Pass (72 UCAS Points). A Distinction is equivalent to three A* grades at A-Level.
