Guide to Hereford: Our city

Students at summer event at the Shack Revolution

Hereford is a city you can feel at home in.

A spirit that you can’t find anywhere else

From floating festivals to three-storey murals, Hereford is a historic city that is full of colour. Dive into an arts and culture scene that is undeniably independent. From DIY house and punk nights and indoor markets, to pop-up exhibitions - this is a community you can make your own, and find your niche in.

A £20m refurbishment will give the city a world-leading museum and art gallery in its historic centre, while Green Man Festival and Borderlines Film Festival lead the list of essential events you will want to check out while you’re studying here. And we have the world’s best burgers.

Space to breathe

One of the best things about our city is the wealth of green spaces in and around it.

Get up among the clouds with a hike up the Black Mountains, or get your head down in a park. Hereford is a green city with parks, wetlands, paddleboarding and great access to nature and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Whether you want to get the blood pumping or just get some headspace, the city is set up for it.

It also a city that's passionate about preserving that environment. With investment in bike lanes, electric busses and moss boxes to filter the air it's a city committed to a low-carbon future.

Live five minutes from everywhere

Stay in student halls designed with you in mind. From big, shared social spaces to extra desk space for creative work, and the security and amenities you want if you’re living away from home for the first time, No 1 Station Approach opened less than five years' ago.

The student accommodation block is two minutes’ walk from two supermarkets, five minutes’ from a GP, and about the same to the centre of town. It also has great access to public transport - both the free electric bus service and the regional rail links - and is five-minute bike ride to campus.

Save money without the sacrificing your student experience

Small-city living means getting great access to arts and culture without the high rents of London, Bristol or Birmingham.

You can earn while you learn through HCA’s popular student ambassador programmes or by picking up part-time work in Hereford’s buzzing independent food and drink culture.

Take advantage of free electric busses, a great cycle network and a city celebrated for walkability - as well as a thriving indoor and outdoor market culture with affordable streetfood, fresh veggies and low-cost vintage stalls helping you take a big chunk out of your monthly expenses as a student, while uncovering hidden gems.
