In the wake of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, artist blacksmith Serhii Polubotko received a humanitarian aid package intended for soldiers, sent by his friend Daniel Miklos. Among the contents was a metal cross inscribed with the heartfelt message, “For Peace and Hope for Ukraine.” This powerful sentiment resonated deeply with Serhii, inspiring him to challenge both Ukrainian and international blacksmiths to forge their own crosses in support of this vision.

In response to this call to action, students from the Artist Blacksmithing degree at Hereford College of Arts enthusiastically participated, creating over 48 crosses. These remarkable works have since joined a touring exhibition featuring contributions from artists across 27 different countries. The exhibition aims to inspire peace and solidarity in the face of global conflicts.

For me, the cross symbolizes intersection and conjunction—a point of meeting between the vertical and horizontal, between the cosmos and the Earth, the universal and the individual. We believe that our efforts represent a small step towards peace and a better world.
