Biography

Russell Roberts has over 30 years’ experience in museums and galleries, higher education and heritage sectors. Having held major posts in national museums, universities and heritage industry, his work has focused on curatorial strategies and cross-cultural programming.

Dr Roberts' curatorial work with photography has been widely published and curated exhibitions shown internationally including Moderna Museet, Nederland Fotomuseum, Rencontres de Arles, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, The Photographers’ Gallery, MoMA (Oxford) and the Finnish Centre for Photography. 

He has been a member for awards committees for the Deutsche Börse Prize, the Nikon Award, the Infinity Prize, the Wüstenrot Foundation Prize and the Royal Photographic Society. Russell was also Director of the European Centre for Photographic Research at the University of Wales, Newport, with its leading post-graduate and doctoral programme, following several years as Head of Photography for the Science Museum, London.

Russell has governance experience in organisations across the cultural sector and a strong commitment to an evolving art school ethos that promotes experiment and critical thinking in the visual arts. As a Board member he also serves on both the Academic Quality and Standards Committee and the Search and Governance Committee.
