In 2019 James and Shona Heath were asked to collaborate on the production design for Yorgos Lanthimos’ and Searchlight Pictures’ ‘Poor Things’. The film was based on the novel by Alasdair Gray of the same name, and tells an incredible tale about the evolution of Bella Baxter, starring Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe and Mark Ruffalo. This project earned James and Shona a number of awards for their design, including (but not limited to): the Art Director’s Guild Award for ‘Excellence in Production Design for a Fantasy Film’ and both a BAFTA and an Oscar for ‘Best Production Design’ in 2024.
2020 saw James, a self-confessed espionage nut, design James Watkins’ ‘The Ipcress File’, a six-part TV mini series based on Len Deighton’s 1962 cold war novel. James has further collaborated with James Watkins in 2023 on the feature film ‘Speak No Evil’ for Blumhouse, a psychological horror thriller based on the Danish 2022 indie film.
Recently James continued his collaboration with Sean Durkin and Matyas Erdely on the feature ‘Iron Claw’ for A24. The film examines the tragic true sports story of the Von Erich family and their professional wrestling empire, starring Zac Efron and Jeremy Allen White.
