Julie has been a dedicated educator in Textile Design since 2006, teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. She completed her training at Middlesex University, where she earned a First Class BA Honours in Constructed Textiles. Julie is a highly skilled hand weaver, with a deep expertise in woven textile structures, and her academic and professional interests encompass emerging textile trends, cross-disciplinary work, and advancements in yarns and fibres. Her research delves into the integration of spatial design, with traditional weaving methodologies, exploring how yarn characteristics and finishing processes can influence textile outcomes.
Julie combines her passion for teaching with a dynamic career as a Researcher and Textile Designer. Her industry experience is both broad and impressive. As a Textile Designer, she has showcased her work at prestigious international trade shows such as Premier Vision and Pitti Filati, and has undertaken commissioned projects for notable clients including The Acadia Group, Hinchliffe Yarns, Wallace and Sewell and Salt.
As a Designer/Maker, Julie has exhibited her work nationally, participating in commercial outlets and art fairs, including the British Craft Room at Liberty. She was also a founding member of an artist collective that organized a series of pop-up events and group exhibitions at the Menier Gallery in London. In 2000, she received the Herefordshire Contemporary Craft Bursary, further recognizing her contribution to the field.
Julie’s academic research includes innovative investigations into laser-enhanced biotechnology for textile design, self-assembling garments from loom to hanger, and the utilization of social media as a learning tool. Her multifaceted career reflects a commitment to advancing textile design through both practical application and scholarly exploration.
