I make bespoke domestic and garden sculpture to commission for private customers. My style is inspired by Art Nouveau, as the flowing organic shapes convey a sense of natural energy and elegance, both qualities I endeavour to express through my own work. Creativity is very important to me, so while I sometimes do repair work, and will copy things to order—really, I make anything but horse shoes—it’s important to me that 80-90 percent of my output is designed and made by me. While I always respond to my customers, and will tailor pieces to the commission, the work always reflects my individual style. I’m proud of never letting my work out into the world unless I’m really happy with it. Sometimes it’s challenging being self-employed, and in the past I’ve taken on part time work to supplement what I earn from making, but I find it makes a nice balance. And it’s worth it. When you finish making something you love, it is an enormous high. My goal is to own my own workshop, which would just be the cherry on the cake. Meanwhile, I’m working through my Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths awards. I now have an Associate, and next year I’m planning to apply for a bronze. I’m happy that I’ve been able to stick with my own ethos.
My journey at HCA was invaluable. You have unlimited time to explore materials and create your own style, without the pressures of day-to-day life. That time to focus, try something new, start again, is time you don't have when you are trying to earn a living. I have been building on the foundations I made at Hereford to this day, and feel very lucky to be able to design and make my own work, with confidence and creativity.
